Effective January 5th, 2015, CMS has established four new modifiers that further define modifier -59, in an effort to address concerns surrounding the abuse of this modifier in relation to bypass of the National Correct Coding Initiative Edits. While modifier -59 will still be recognized, CMS may selectively require a more specific modifier to be utilized when submitting claims. In this healthcare video you will be provided a brief history of the National Correct Coding Initiative, a summary of these most recent modifier enhancements to modifier -59, and strategies for review of claims where modifier -59 and the newer, more descriptive modifiers are reported.
